It’s been awhile since I first started decorating the apartment. I though to myself, how much have I really spent on the place. Since, it’s easy to get carried away with budget, I thought I’d share how much I had spent on my living room alone.
- Pair of white leather couches – $1,000 (Home Quarters)
I got these for a steal really. They were asking $1300 plus tax and I got it for $1000 without tax. Just goes to show you, even in a furniture store where you think haggling is impossible, do so. What’s the worst that can happen? Not getting a discount? Home Quarters is also a great store that offeres fantastic solutions for an apartment space. Most of their pieces includes built in storage and can be adjusted to fit the space. - White tuffed leather chair - $250 (HomeSense)
This is also a steal. Got it at HomeSense. When you’re designing, it pays to shop often. Especially at a discount store at HomeSense. You never know if there’s something new and on a great price point. - LACK coffee tables – $30 for 2 (IKEA)
These are pretty standard. They’re easier to move when guests arrive and can easily made into side tables. - BESTA book shelves – $500 for 2 (IKEA)
For anyone lacking space, these shelves are a must. Their height gives them plenty of room for storage. Nevermind the mirad of fittings you can buy to make them function just the way you need. - RENS Sheep skin rug – $200 (IKEA)
I needed something that’s soft on the feet but still easy to maintain with a cat in the apartment. Sheep skin is naturally stain resistant and is fantastically cosy. - Ventless gel fireplace – $200 (Craig’s List)
Again, don’t be afraid to explore your shopping options. Craig’s list has lots of great solutions for cheap. I needed a focal point on the stark wall but couldn’t get a fireplace that needed venting. Still, I wanted real flames. So ventless gel was the way to go. - Floor Lamp – $45 (IKEA)
This paper shade floor lamp makes for good reading light and adds a warm glow to the place. - Overhead Lamp – FREE (Neighbours)
I found this one morning in our apartment laundry room with a sign that said “still works. Free”. It was a done deal. I quickly comp’ed it into my apartment. All we need is a new shade now. - Lilies – $5 (Downtown Vancouver)
We have fresh flower stands all over downtown Vancouver. We’re blessed that way. Flowers are an easy way to add some life and colour to the space. - Throw Pillows – $50 (HomeSense)
I have a pair of b/w faux fur throw pillows. They give a bit of softness to the space just like the sheep skin rug.
That gives us a grant total of $2280. Not bad for a finished living room that is comfortable and functional.
