    Borrow Some Big Boy Tools

by Sijia on February 1, 2010

Some times, the best tool for the job belongs in the garage with all the other big boy tools. Even something as non-macho as cleaning the grout.

People can agree that cleaning old dingy grout is one large chore. However, to keep your bathroom sanitary and in showroom condition, it is a necessary evil. To save yourself some time and energy, borrow a frequented tool from the man of the house. I’m speaking of the wire brush.

This handy little tool is a variation of the nylon stiff brushes which are mostly used for dish washing. The boys use them to clean tough messes like rusts off an axle. Cleaning the grout isn’t quite as hard but doesn’t hurt to make the job easier by borrowing this tool.

    • Use it just like a nylon brush, or tooth brush.
    • Hold the bristles parallel to the grout line you’re trying to clean.
    • Press gently and use a forward and back motion. Don’t press too hard or you might damage the tile surface! (especially on natural stone)

All that gunk should fall off like melting butter. When you’re done, turn on the shower head and spray the wall clean. You can also use a mild bleach solution (1:3 bleach/water ratio) to whiten your grout and also sanitize the crevice.

If you find that your grout lines are too recessed, you can also re-grout after you’re done. Mix the grout according to instructions and apply at a 45 degree angle to the grout lines with a trowel. Wait for it to dry and wipe off excess with a wet sponge.

Your grout and bathroom should look refreshed and new again!
