    Borrow Some Big Boy Tools

by Sijia on February 1, 2010

Some times, the best tool for the job belongs in the garage with all the other big boy tools. Even something as non-macho as cleaning the grout.

People can agree that cleaning old dingy grout is one large chore. However, to keep your bathroom sanitary and in showroom condition, it is a necessary evil. To save yourself some time and energy, borrow a frequented tool from the man of the house. I’m speaking of the wire brush.

This handy little tool is a variation of the nylon stiff brushes which are mostly used for dish washing. The boys use them to clean tough messes like rusts off an axle. Cleaning the grout isn’t quite as hard but doesn’t hurt to make the job easier by borrowing this tool.

    • Use it just like a nylon brush, or tooth brush.
    • Hold the bristles parallel to the grout line you’re trying to clean.
    • Press gently and use a forward and back motion. Don’t press too hard or you might damage the tile surface! (especially on natural stone)

All that gunk should fall off like melting butter. When you’re done, turn on the shower head and spray the wall clean. You can also use a mild bleach solution (1:3 bleach/water ratio) to whiten your grout and also sanitize the crevice.

If you find that your grout lines are too recessed, you can also re-grout after you’re done. Mix the grout according to instructions and apply at a 45 degree angle to the grout lines with a trowel. Wait for it to dry and wipe off excess with a wet sponge.

Your grout and bathroom should look refreshed and new again!

    January 29, 2010

It’s been awhile since I first started decorating the apartment. I though to myself, how much have I really spent on the place. Since, it’s easy to get carried away with budget, I thought I’d share how much I had spent on my living room alone.

Pair of white leather couches – $1,000 (Home Quarters)
    I got [...]

Design and Furnish with Your Pets In Mind

    January 28, 2010

If you have a pet that shares your living space with you, then you must design and furnish with your pet in mind.
I moved into my apartment with no furniture and I was set on a white couch. I was aware that a 14 year old cat will be moving in with me. Also, due [...]

    Apartment Hunting

    January 27, 2010

Tomorrow after work Mark and I are going apartment hunting. We were kind of forced into it by a realtor. So we’re likely not going to buy. Still, it’s good to check out what’s out there and critique on design elements.
Still I will have to follow my own advice on avoiding buyer’s remorse.
    Have you washed [...]

When in Doubt, Turn to Mother Nature

    January 25, 2010

I spent a lot of time fixing up my IT consulting site over the weekend. So much so I haven’t really left house except for to eat. Even after the layout and the grand scheme of things were done, I spent hours sitting in front of the computer with my browser and Photoshop open, trying [...]

    Colourize the Right Way

    January 24, 2010

There is a right and wrong way to add colour but it doesn’t need to be complicated.
Follow this one simple rule for no fail colour:

Use 3 distinct colour tones to add depth and warmth

Neutral – Molding, Trim work, Furniture
    Mid Tone -  Walls, Furniture
Highlight – Accessories, Throw pillows, curtains, accents

I was going to give more lessons [...]
